Capt. Frank Carpenter

Evening Mr. Booth.

Bramwell

Mr. Stead, this is Capt. Frank Carpenter and his fiancée, Jenny Turner.

W.T. Stead

I’m pleased to meet you both.

Bramwell

Jenny is a member of the army and has agreed to assist us in our scheme.

W.T. Stead

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your helping us in this matter, Miss Turner.

Bramwell

Miss Turner, Mr. Stead will be known to you as Mr. Sullivan, to protect his identity of course.

Jenny Turner

Yes of course.

Capt. Frank Carpenter

Mr. Stead, what if something goes wrong?

W.T. Stead

We have tried to cover everything Captain, but there are certain risks. Miss Turner? You do understand?

Jenny Turner

Yes, Mr. Stead. I understand. But I’m willing to chance it.

W.T. Stead

Very well then. (taking a piece of paper from his pocket) Here is the address.

Music takes us to next scene

The Brothel

Isobel Wicken

And you say you have a regular client, Miss Turner?

Jenny Turner

Yes, Mrs. Wicken, a gentleman comes to see me two or three times a week.

Isobel Wicken

Splendid. I think things will work out quite well for you here, then. (calling) Henry! Come in here.

Sound / Henry’s heavy footsteps enter

Henry

(grunts)

Jenny Turner

(gasps)

Isobel Wicken

Don’t let Henry’s size frighten you my dear. He’s really quite harmless . . . aren’t you Henry?

Henry

(grunts)

Isobel Wicken

Henry can’t speak. He was born without a tongue . . . Henry, show Miss Turner to her room.

Henry

(grunts)

Isobel Wicken

Oh, and Miss Turner?

Jenny Turner

Yes Mrs. Wicken?

Isobel Wicken

I expect all of my girls to be present in the drawing room at the beginning of each evening.

Jenny Turner

Yes, mum.
